Checkout Simulator explores the monotony of retail work through the lens of worker surveillance and expression recognition technologies. With predictions that customer service jobs may soon be too human to perform, the project examines the checkout of the future, screening participants for suitability as they audition for a job.

The work uses a machine learning model to monitor facial expressions while completing tasks, scanning barcodes as accurately and stoically as possible. A custom housed receipt printer and audio device provide real-time feedback, answering the question: Will you be HIRED or FIRED?
